OVERVIEW

The internship is an individual learning experience designed to apply and deepen the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the Master's Degree Programme in Building Engineering.

It may take place at a company, a public institution, a research institute — including abroad — or within the university itself, under the supervision of an internal academic tutor and, if carried out outside UNIGE, an external company tutor. The activity must be consistent with the educational objectives of the degree programme.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The internship aims to:

• Develop and strengthen practical, technical, and professional skills;

• Provide direct experience in solving engineering problems in real-world contexts;

• Enhance students’ autonomy, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the internship, the student will be able to:

• Apply theoretical knowledge to professional and practical tasks;

• Work effectively in multidisciplinary and collaborative environments;

• Demonstrate increased professional awareness and readiness to enter the job market or engage in advanced research activities.

PREREQUISITES

No specific prerequisites are required; however, it is strongly recommended that students complete all compulsory courses included in their study plan and pass the related exams before starting the internship.

TEACHING METHODS

125 hours of supervised training activities carried out at a company, public institution, research center, or university laboratory.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Internship activities may include (but are not limited to):

• Participation in technical or research projects;

• Data collection and environmental monitoring;

• Development of software tools, models, or simulations;

• Preparation of technical reports and documentation;

• Attendance at meetings, site visits, and collaborative activities with professionals.

The internship must be formalized through an internship agreement between the university and the host institution, and must be preceded by a training plan (https://tirocinitesi.unige.it/home).

The DICCA Department, which hosts the Degree Programme, has launched the GROWTH@DICCA initiative — a programme aimed at supporting internships at institutions, companies, engineering firms, and research centres in Italy and abroad.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

To be recommended, if applicable, by the academic tutor and/or the company tutor, depending on the internship content.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The evaluation is based on the completion of a final report certifying the activities carried out by the student.
The assessment is generally pass/fail, unless otherwise specified by the degree programme regulations.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The internship validation requires:

• Completion of the required number of hours (according to the ECTS credits);

• Approval by the academic tutor;

• Positive evaluation by the host institution (if external).

In some cases, the internship can be integrated into the master’s thesis or serve as support for it.
