In a landscape where the energy transition plays a key role in driving innovation and sustainability, this course provides the theoretical foundation needed to understand and tackle the complexity of modern electrical energy systems. It serves as a fundamental part of the educational path, aimed at building solid skills in the analysis, modeling, and control of electric power systems. The course integrates theoretical knowledge with software and simulation tools to support and validate design decisions related to the operation, control, and protection of modern electric energy systems.
This module provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical, methodological, and technological foundations for the management, control, protection, and stability enhancement of electrical power systems. Emphasis is placed on the challenges introduced by the liberalized electricity market and the ongoing energy transition. Students will gain the skills necessary to define system operating points, ensure operational continuity (including blackout prevention), and model and control frequency and active power across normal, alert, and emergency conditions. The course also covers modern protection strategies, criteria, and techniques, with a focus on the interface requirements and dynamic behavior of inverter-based resources. Theoretical concepts are reinforced through system modeling and simulation exercises.
