CODE 118847 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 3 cfu anno 2 SCIENZE AMBIENTALI E NATURALI 9916 (L-32) - GENOVA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR BIO/04 TEACHING LOCATION GENOVA SEMESTER 1° Semester OVERVIEW Plants are autotrophic organisms that convert solar energy into multiple forms suitable for carrying out various physiological functions. Throughout the course, these modes of energy conversion will be explored in depth, focusing on photosynthetic processes and the mechanisms by which plants redistribute energy. General principles of mineral nutrition and water uptake from the soil will also be discussed, always in relation to the energy sources that make these processes possible. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to provide the foundations for understanding the functional mechanisms of plant organisms, with particular focus on angiosperms, in relation to the use of light energy and the ways in which its conversion enables the various physiological processes essential for plant growth and development. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The student will acquire knowledge of photosynthesis, energy redistribution through the phloem, water uptake and transport, and plant nutrition. TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons. SYLLABUS/CONTENT From light to photosynthesis: light phase and metabolic phase. Redistribution of photosynthates: the phloem. The pathway of water from roots to leaves. Energy and plant nutrition: electricity in action. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY 1) Rascio.
