    OVERVIEW

    This teaching unit in Macroeconomics is part of the curriculum and provides tools to understand the determination of the main macroeconomic aggregates such as output (GDP), unemployment, inflation, and interest rates.

     

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The course intends to provide some theoretical schemes needed to follow and interpret the dynamics of the main national and international macroeconomic variables.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    At the end of the teaching unit, the student will be able to:
    - Apply integrated macroeconomic models (content) to determine the main national economicaggregates (condition) [Dublin Descriptor 2];
    - Evaluate the effects of fiscal and monetary policies (content) in theoretical and applied contexts (condition), justifying choices with coherent arguments (criterion) [Dublin Descriptor 3];
    - Critically analyse the current macroeconomic debate (content) using the acquired tools (condition) [Dublin Descriptor 4].

    PREREQUISITES

    Students are expected to have a good knowledge of the techniques for solving first-order equations.

     

    TEACHING METHODS

    The teaching unit is delivered through frontal lectures. Attendance is not compulsory.


    Students with certified disabilities, specific learning disorders (SLD), or special educational needs should contact both the instructor and the Department's disability liaison, Professor Serena Scotto (scotto@economia.unige.it), at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and examination arrangements that, while respecting the objectives of the teaching unit, take into account individual learning needs and allow the use of compensatory tools.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    The syllabus of the teaching unit is the following:

    I. The main topics of Macroeconomics: definition of output, unemployment and inflation rate
    II. The market for goods
    III. Financial markets
    IV. The IS-LM model
    V. The extended IS-LM model
    VI. The labour market
    VII. The Phillips curve, the natual rate of unemployement and the inflation rate
    VIII. The IS-LM-PC model

    Further indications will be eventually provided during the lectures

    The textbook is the following:

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    The exam is given by a written assessment with open questions and numerical/analytical exercises. Erasmus students can ask to give the exam in English.

    ASSESSMENT METHODS

    The answers to the open questions and the solutions of the numerical/analytical exercises will be evaluated based on their correctness, the proper use of technical language, calculation skills, and the ability to reproduce graphs and diagrams related to the topics covered.
