Knowledge of discipline-specific terminology. Knowledge of the subcellular, cellular, and tissue structures of the human body. Understanding of the morpho-functional characteristics of the microscopic and ultrastructural organization of human cells and supracellular units, represented by tissues, multi-tissue units, and morphofunctional units. Ability to recognize and appropriately describe a histological structure, starting from its cellular organization. Integrate knowledge of the mechanisms of cellular differentiation, cellular interactions, and histogenesis with related functional and clinical aspects. The knowledge acquired constitutes an essential cultural asset for a full understanding of the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the organs and systems of the human body. TEACHING METHODS The integrated course provides 1 credits of theoretical-practical lessons focalized to the observation and description of histological preparations by the use of light microscopes. The histology laboratory includes 8 theoretical-practical lessons. Students are divided into groups. The observation is guided by monitors connected with a light microscope used by the teacher. During such internships, students practice the recognition of histological samples both with the optical microscope and with the projection of slides and explain why they have come to the diagnosis and how each sample is recognized and differs from others. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The histology laboratory is a practical laboratory taking place in the classroom equipped with light microscopes. Students are divided into groups. The histology laboratory includes 8 practical activities subdivided as following : -1st exercise concerning the epithelia; -2nd exercise concerning the exocrine glands; -3rd exercise concerning the endocrine glands and connective tissues; -4th exercise concerning cartilage, bone tissue, and ossification; -5th exercise concerning blood and lymphoid tissue; -6th exercise concerning muscular tissue and nervous tissue. ASSESSMENT METHODS The practical exam using the light microscope will assess the student's ability to correctly recognize histological preparations and describe the morphological characteristics that guided his/her identification. The student must demonstrate: • knowledge of the main procedures for observing histological preparations in light microscopy; • ability to recognize and describe the main ultrastructural patterns of subcellular components in relation to different tissues; • knowledge of the morpho-functional characteristics of different cellular components and tissues.
