CODE 118257 ACADEMIC YEAR 2025/2026 CREDITS 3 cfu anno 1 SCIENZE E CULTURE AGROALIMENTARI DEL MEDITERRANEO 11758 (L/GASTR R) - IMPERIA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR CHIM/07 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION IMPERIA SEMESTER 1° Semester MODULES Questo insegnamento è un modulo di: STATISTICAL, OPERATIONAL AND CHEMICAL RESEARCH OF TECHNOLOGIES AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The training activities proposed in the form of lectures, teaching delivery, integrative teaching, exercises and numerical applications, associated with individual study, will allow the student to: - Solve thermodynamics and equilibrium exercises - Study the properties of acids and bases and calculate the pH of the solutions in which they are dissolved - know how electrochemical cells work - understand the phenomena of air, water and soil pollution; - Define the reaction rate. - Describe and compare the factors that influence the reaction rate. -Write the kinetic equation for an elementary reaction. -Relate the different hybridizations of carbon to the structure of hydrocarbons -Identify the main functional groups in Organic Chemistry and name them using the IUPAC system, -Describe and represent the structure of organic molecules. -Discuss all the proposed activities with a scientific method and appropriate language TEACHING METHODS The teaching strategies adopted include a mixed and active approach, alternating moments of frontal lessons, asynchronous online lessons, and interactive teaching. In particular, the following will be used: Front-class lessons to introduce the fundamental theoretical concepts (in presence). Online lessons to deepen the contents through videos, multimedia materials and asynchronous reinforcement activities, encouraging autonomous and personalized learning. E-tivity to stimulate individual reflection and collaborative discussion, through forums, digital tasks, interactive quizzes and creative productions, in asynchronous and synchronous mode. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Thermodynamics (1st and 2nd law of Thermodynamics, Enthalpy, Entropy, Free energy, heats of reaction) Kinetics Chemical equilibria (equilibrium constant, free energy and equilibrium) pH and hydrolysis (definitions of acid and base, pH calculation) Electrochemistry (Batteries, electrolysis, fuel cell) Pollution phenomena Chemical kinetics. Carbon hybridization. The main functional groups in Organic Chemistry, structure and IUPAC nomenclature: hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, benzene), alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers, amines, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives. Notes on other organic compounds of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorus. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY The notes taken during the lessons and the material in aulaweb are sufficient for the preparation of the exam, but the following books are suggested as support and in-depth texts. - M. Panizza, Chimica per Ingegneria (Teoria ed esercizi); Elementi di chimica L. Palmisano, G. Marcì, A. Costantini, G. Luciani, M. Schiavello, EdiSES - J.Smith Fondamenti di Chimica Organica, McGraw Hill ed., o J.McMurry, Fondamenti di Chimica Organica, Zanichelli; o T.Poon, Introduzione alla Chimica Organica, EdiSES; The examples of the final test are available on the aulaweb website of the course. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD MARCO PANIZZA Ricevimento: Upon appointment to be fixed at the teacher office: DICCA - Chemical Engineering Section, Polytechnic School, second floor via Opera Pia 15 - Genoa or using Teams ELISABETTA FINOCCHIO Ricevimento: By appointment. ASSESSMENT METHODS The exam tests with the student will allow to: assess the knowledge of the main thermodynamic quantities involved in the transformation of matter and the conditions of chemical equilibrium; test the ability in the quantitative evaluation of equilibria in aqueous solutions and in electrochemical systems; assess understanding of phenomena related to pollution define the reaction rate and the factors that influence it, write the kinetic equation related to elementary reactions. assign the correct nomenclature to organic compounds; analyze and compare the properties and structure of simple organic molecules. The correctness and completeness of the answer will be assessed as well as the use of the appropriate specialized vocabulary FURTHER INFORMATION Working students and students with DSA certification, disability or other special educational needs are advised to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course to agree on teaching and exam methods that, in compliance with the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning methods
