OVERVIEW

The course, comprising 36 hours of lessons, aims to develop the learners’ communicative competence in Italian, focusing in particular on receptive language skills (reading and listening comprehension) and metalinguistic competence.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The  teaching unit  aims to provide a basic knowledge of spoken and written Italian, and a glimpse at Italian culture and heritage.

TEACHING METHODS

Interactive lessons in presence; oral exchanges in pairs and small groups.

Students who hold valid certificates relating to Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the lecturer and the school’s disability liaison officer at the start of the course to agree on any teaching arrangements which, whilst respecting the course objectives, take into account individual learning styles.

LEXICAL ELEMENTS

Greetings, nationalities, classroom objects, people and school environments, physical appearance, time (hours), hobbies, free time, days of the week, months, seasons, weather, professions, family relationships (kinship terms), dishes, courses, meals, food, drinks, the set table, clothing, colors, means of transport, shops, rooms in the house, places in the city, accommodation while traveling, hotel services, bedroom furniture, parts of the body, symptoms, medicines, treatments, sports, holidays and vacations.

COMMUNICATIVE ELEMENTS

Introducing oneself; asking and saying one’s name, nationality, and age; asking and saying how someone feels; spelling in Italian; expressing agreement, disagreement, uncertainty, and doubt; asking and saying where one works; asking and saying what one studies; expressing an opinion; asking for explanations; describing physical appearance; ordering at a café; asking and telling the time; accepting or refusing an invitation; talking about free time; describing the weather; asking and saying one’s date of birth; asking and saying what day it is; organizing a trip; giving good wishes; asking and saying what the weather is like; describing someone’s personality; asking for and giving an address; talking about family; ordering at a restaurant; locating objects in space; talking about daily habits; shopping in a store; describing one’s home; asking for information about a course; talking about health; interacting at a pharmacy; talking about what one did over the weekend; talking about a vacation; talking about holidays.

MORPHOSYNTACTIC ELEMENTS

The alphabet; subject personal pronouns; pronunciation of c and g; the formal form (polite form); affirmative sentence; negative sentence; interrogative sentence; interrogative pronouns; gender and number of nouns and adjectives; formation of masculine and feminine forms; descriptive adjectives; noun–adjective agreement; cardinal and ordinal numbers; definite and indefinite articles; present indicative of regular, irregular, and reflexive verbs; the structure of the verb piacere; possessive adjectives; adverbs of frequency; conjunctions; simple prepositions; present perfect (passato prossimo).
