OVERVIEW

Toxicological chemistry topics, being strictly linked to pharmaceutical chemistry topics, will be discussed throughout the entire duration of the course. Main topics: toxicity of inorganic and organic elements and compounds, alkaloids, drugs  (potential toxicity). Particular attention will be paid to POPs (persistent organic pollutants) and their health effects.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, students will be able to discuss the toxicity of the various substances examined, based on their biological target, chemical structure, and mechanism of action.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The educational objectives of the course are to enable students to identify and classify a toxic or potentially toxic substance.

PREREQUISITES

To successfully approach the course and derive the maximum learning benefit, a good knowledge of basic chemistry, particularly inorganic and organic chemistry, is required. Furthermore, notions learned in Biochemistry, General Pharmacology, and obviously General Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Chemistry I and II are extremely useful.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is organized in frontal lessons. The topics will be illustrated by the teacher through Powerpoint presentations that are shared on the course TEAM. During the lessons, slides are used.

Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department ( Prof. Luca Raiteri, Luca.Raiteri@unige.it ) before class begins, in order to liaise and arrange the specific learning methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. VERY IMPORTANT: any request for compensatory tools and adaptations in the exam MUST be done within 10 working days before the date of the exam according to the instructions that can be found at https://unige.it/disabilita-dsa/comunicazioni

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Toxicity of inorganic elements, inorganic compounds, aromatic and non-aromatic organic compounds, alkaloids, drugs (potential toxicity). Particular attention is paid to POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants).

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

There are no textbooks available; the material consists of the lecture slides and notes taken during class. Regarding POPs, students can consult the available literature on PubMed.

Students are received by appointment, to be arranged via email.
