CODE 72553 ACADEMIC YEAR 2026/2027 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 INGEGNERIA MECCANICA PER L'AUTOMAZIONE 11976 (L-9 R) - LA SPEZIA SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR ING-IND/16 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION LA SPEZIA SEMESTER 1° Semester OVERVIEW Manufacturing technology module introduces students to the fundamental topics for the study of the production processes used by manufacturing industries, specifically metal cutting processes. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Provide the tools for the study of mechanical metrology (including micro- and nano-surface geometry) and cutting processes, considering their mechanics, theoretical models, machines, shape generation, kinematics, structures, transducers, and CNC. Present welding processes, highlighting their metallurgy and defects. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Active participation in the proposed training activities (both lectures and laboratory activities) and individual study will enable students to: know the main tools used in the field of mechanical metrology, applied in manufacturing processes. apply metrological knowledge in practical laboratory examples. employ simple theoretical models (kinematic, dynamic, thermodynamic) to evaluate, under orthogonal machining assumptions, forces, powers, temperatures as a function of the cutting parameters adopted. deterministically evaluate tool life. classify and select tool materials on the basis of their chemical-mechanical characteristics. understand the characteristics of the main machining operations for machining, plastic deformation and foundry, including the main elements of calculation. The student should also acquire the ability to choose possible production solutions for a given part, identify the main process parameters and their effect on the characteristics of the part, evaluate possible production problems, and acquire general knowledge of machine tools and production system management. To complete the theoretical training, the course includes one or more visits to laboratories and/or companies. TEACHING METHODS Teaching consists of lectures covering theoretical concepts and application examples. Laboratory sessions on metrology are also included. Mechanical metrology: quantities, measurement uncertainty, indirect measurements, statistical analysis for repeated measurements, measurements and tools, interferometry, CMM; surface microgeometry, measurement parameters and tools, 3D analysis, nano-geometry, AFM. Machining: tool geometry and chip formation, orthogonal cutting mechanics, sliding plane criteria, cutting forces and dynamometers, thermodynamics of cutting and temperature measurement; tool materials, wear mechanisms, tool life and predictive models. Plastic deformation: rolling, extrusion, forging and drawing. Foundry: sand, shell and shell forming. The written test only applies to a single examination. There will be 3 examination calls available for the winter session (January-February) and 3 examination calls for the summer session (June, July and September). No special calls will be granted outside the periods specified in the course regulations, except for working students enrolled part-time. ASSESSMENT METHODS The assessment is made through a training activity, a written test and an oral examination. The student in the written test must demonstrate that he/she understands the topics explained in the lectures and solve problems from the definitions and exercises carried out in class. The reference topics of the written test are: orthogonal machining, tool life, quality. The oral examination consists of a test of what has been learned and the ability to critically employ the models and concepts covered in the teaching. Topics not covered in the written test will also be explored in depth by oral interview.
