OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide knowledge and interpretative tools useful for understanding the geographical dimension of sports and tourism phenomena. Specifically, the course seeks to illustrate if and how indoor and outdoor sports practices impact environmental and social sustainability, and to study the complex relationship between sports and tourism by defining "sports tourism."

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the lessons the student will have acquired knowledge and skills in the fields of geography of sport and tourism. In particular, he/she will know the main tools to analyse tourism and sports infrastructures; he/she will be able to identify the main territorial problems caused by the development of tourism and sports by using the sources appropriately.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the teaching course, students will be able to:

• synthesize the elements that constitute the foundations of territorial development related to sports practice and tourism development;
• analyze and explain the organizational modalities and causes of the development of indoor and outdoor sports in contemporary society;
• understand the motivations that lead to the transformation of the territory to make it usable from a sports and tourism perspective;
• understand the importance of territorial characteristics in order to ensure consistent governance, sports, and tourism policies at the local, regional, national, and international levels;
• argue and describe (in written and oral form) how the development of sports and tourism structures and infrastructure impacts the territory.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of frontal lectures aimed at presenting and studying the main territorial implications of the spread of indoor and outdoor sports practices on the territory, as well as the development of "sports tourism" through the use of practical examples.

The materials used during the lectures will be uploaded to AulaWeb along with other materials (reports, links to databases, etc.) aimed at defining the quantitative aspects of the studied phenomena.

Occasionally, scholars or experts in the field (both Italian and foreign) may also be invited to conduct seminars to delve into specific aspects of the issues discussed.

If the number of students enrolled in the course allows​, attending students will also have the opportunity to carry out case studies through group work. The group work consists of two phases: the drafting of a written paper and an oral presentation accompanied by slides. Detailed information will be provided during the lectures and through the AulaWeb platform of the course.

Positive assessment of the teamwork will allow attending students to acquire the following Open Badge: Personal skill - advanced level.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The program is divided into two parts:

FIRST PART - Tools for understanding the territory, the concept of leisure time, the geography of sports, and the impact of sports practice on the territory.

SECOND PART - Definition of tourism and its impact on the territory, sports practices and activities (participation in events, exhibitions, etc.) that lead to the development of "sports tourism," some examples of sports tourism and their main characteristics (e.g., cycling tourism, golf tourism, etc.).

The teaching deals with topics in line with the following goals and targets of the ONO 2030 Agenda: 

• Objective 8: Promote sustainable, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all (particularly Target 8.9: By 2030, develop and implement policies to promote sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products).
• Objective 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and foster innovation (particularly Target 9.1: Develop quality, reliable, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure, including regional and cross-border infrastructure, to support economic development and human well-being, with particular attention to equitable access for all).
• Objective 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable (particularly Target 11.a: Support positive economic, social, and environmental linkages between urban, peri-urban, and rural areas, strengthening national and regional development planning).
• Objective 12: Ensure sustainable patterns of consumption and production (particularly Target 12.b: Develop and implement tools to monitor the impacts of sustainable development for sustainable tourism that creates jobs and promotes local culture and products).

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam is oral and takes place in person. The exam consists of 4 questions: 2 on the first part, 2 on the second part of the program.

Additionally, and exclusively for those who attend 2/3 of the lessons in person, the teacher may optionally introduce an intermediate written test during the lesson period, which exempts from the oral exam for the corresponding part of the syllabus.

It should also be noted that attending at least 75% of the lessons allows students to take the oral exam with the syllabus designated for attendees.

The course is taught in Italian and, as a rule, the exam must be taken in Italian.

If the number of students allows it, group work will be carried out by attending students. This group work, although discussed during the course, constitutes an integral part of the oral exam.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral interview and the possible intermediate (written) test will allow for the evaluation of:
- mastery and deepening of knowledge,
- the ability to use the skills developed.
Evaluation criteria are:
- the quality of the oral communication,
- the correct use of the appropriate vocabulary,
- the ability of critical analysis, even on possible cases discussed.

The students of  who carry out the group work will also be assessed on the quality of the paper as regards the content and formal aspects.
