OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide the students with the basic tools and knowledges for a sociological understanding of the educational processes, starting from some key topics of the sociology of education; specific attention will be set to  sociology of schools, with references to the “scuola dell’infanzia” and “ scuola primaria”.

 

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide the basic tools for a sociological reading of educational processes
(scholastic and extracurricular). Particular attention will be devoted to the sociology of schooling with reference to the different cases of the kindergarten and primary school. At the same time, space will be devoted to theoretical analysis and the ability to apply the theory to the different school situations in which future teachers will be involved. The aim of the course is the development of the critical spirit and the ability to read educational and scholastic phenomena beyond stereotypical and prejudicial visions and interpretations.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

"Scuola dell’infanzia": The goal is to provide the students with the basic tools and knowledges for a sociological understanding of the educational processes about primary socialization, developing the critical mind and the ability to analyze the social context  beyond prejudices and stereotypes]

"Scuola Primaria": The goal is to provide the students with the basic tools and knowledges for a sociological understanding of the educational processes  about secondary  socialization, developing the critical mind and the ability to analyze the social context  beyond prejudices and stereotypes

PREREQUISITES

For foreign students o specific prerequisites related to knowledge of the discipline are required.

TEACHING METHODS

The lessons will be provided in modules, focusing each the main course’s themes.

The lessons will take place in presence. We altern frontal lessons and interactiv lessons, in which students will be asked to actively participate, through the use of different methodologies: brainstorming, guided discussions, discussions with invited experts, group work, coffee work, analysis of video material . Students will be required to actively participate (individually or in group activities), both during the activities proposed in the classroom and by studying on materials provided by the teacher and uploaded to aulaweb.

The students’ attendance  is not mandatory however all the activities carried out in the classroom are an important part of the course andthe  participation in them will contribute to the final evaluation.
Videos and images produced by the visual sociology laboratory (DISFOR)  will be exploited as well

For students with disabilities or specific learning disorder (SLD).

Students with disabilities, with a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD), or with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are reminded that in order to request exam accommodations, they must first submit their certification to the Office for Services for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities and with SLD at the University.

Subsequently, to request exam accommodations, those who have a disability or SLD are required to fill out the form available on this page: Services for students with disabilities or with SLD | UniGe | University of Genoa. Instead, students with SEN are required to send an email to the instructor, copying the School Representative for the inclusion of students with disabilities and with SLD (laura.traverso@unige.it) and the 'Student Inclusion' Office <inclusione.studenti@info.unige.it>. In the email, it is necessary to specify:

the name of the course  
the date of the exam session  
one's surname, first name, and student ID number  
the compensatory tools and exempting measures considered functional and requested.  

For everyone, adaptation requests must be submitted well in advance (7 working days) before the exam date. Late requests may not be accepted.

Different macro -argumetns will be developed (whit a particular attention about differences between “scuola dell’infanzia” and  “scuola primaria” and the children’s ages).The sociological study of educational processes; socialization and identity; theories of childhood; inequalities in education; the relationship betweenschool and family; changes about family in the  XIX, XX century; the role of teachers; migration processes and education system

oral interview and on-going tests related to the activities carried out in the classroom

 

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Assessment of students’ learning will take place with tests  (during the class) and an final oral inteview.

The tests will be carried out in order to verify the understanding of the topics addressed

The final oral exam with open questions, in which the student will have to demonstrate knowledge of clear theoretical references and precise concepts on the foundations of the sociology of education and on the different topics covered during the course. In addition, competence in the specific use of disciplinary terminology used to analyze educational phenomena will be assessed

For students with disabilities or specific learning disorder (SLD)

Students with disabilities or with DSA are reminded that in order to request adaptations in the exam, they must first enter the certification on the University website at servizionline.unige.it in the "Students" section. The documentation will be verified by the University's Services for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities and DSA Sector (https://rubrica.unige.it/strutture/struttura/100111).

Subsequently, significantly in advance (at least 10 days) of the examination date, an e-mail must be sent to the teacher with whom the examination will be taken, including in the knowledge copy both the School's Teacher Referent for the Inclusion of Students with Disabilities and with DSA (laura.traverso@unige.it) and the above-mentioned Sector using one of the following addresses (disabili@unige.it; dsa@unige.it). The e-mail should specify:

    the name of the teaching
    the date of the call
    the student's last name, first name and roll number
    the compensatory tools and dispensatory measures deemed functional and required.

The Prof. Laura Traverso will confirm to the teacher that the applicant has the right to request adaptations in the exam and that these adaptations must be agreed upon with the teacher. The lecturer will respond by informing whether the requested adaptations can be used.

Requests should be sent at least 10 days before the date of the call in order to allow the teacher(s) to evaluate the content. In particular, in the case of intending to make use of concept maps for the exam (which must be much more concise than the maps used for study) if the submission does not meet the deadline there will not be the technical time needed to make any changes, which may be requested by the lecturer.
