Students will be guided to use clinical reasoning to characterize the disorder, acquiring operational tools to make an accurate and valid differential diagnosis, taking into account the comorbidities often present in developmental age. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course is aimed at acquiring knowledge and skills for the diagnosis and intervention of neurodevelopmental disorders. (1) specific assessment tools aimed at drafting the diagnosis and the functioning profile, and (2) techniques and intervention strategies will be presented. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The primary objective of the course is to contribute to the training of psychologists capable of working in the field of neurodevelopmental disorders. Students will be guided in developing the clinical reasoning skills needed to characterize these disorders and to use practical tools for formulating accurate and valid diagnoses—including differential diagnoses—while taking into account the comorbidities frequently present during childhood and adolescence. By the end of the course, students are expected to: have acquired knowledge regarding the clinical assessment of the various types of disabilities and disorders covered in the course have acquired knowledge regarding the clinical treatment of the various types of disorders covered in the course be able to apply the knowledge gained to design targeted clinical interventions use appropriate terminology use appropriate language during history-taking interviews and feedback sessions with parents PREREQUISITES To best address the course contents, the following are considered acquired: phenotypic and etiological knowledge of the disorders that will be addressed; knowledge of Section II "Diagnostic Criteria and Codes" of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (DSM-5). To effectively engage with the course content, students are expected to already possess: knowledge regarding the phenotypic and etiological aspects of the disorders to be discussed; and familiarity with Section II ("Diagnostic Criteria and Codes") concerning Neurodevelopmental Disorders in the DSM-5. As this course is part of the Master’s Degree Program (LM-51) in Psychology, it is assumed that students have acquired—during their undergraduate studies—foundational knowledge in the key areas of psychology and psychological research methodology necessary to adequately address the course material. Specifically, prior knowledge is expected in the following areas: general psychology; developmental psychology; social psychology; clinical psychology; health and well-being psychology; psychobiology and cognitive neuroscience; educational psychology and the psychology of learning processes; personality psychology and individual differences; psychometrics and research methodology; quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques; elements of psychopathology and psychological diagnostics; main theoretical and applied models of psychological assessment and intervention. Additionally, the following are required: ability to read and comprehend scientific texts in Italian and English; ability to use the discipline's specialized terminology; basic skills in the critical analysis of scientific literature; ability to link theoretical models, empirical data, and applied contexts; familiarity with the ethical and deontological principles of the psychology profession. This knowledge forms the necessary foundation for understanding the topics covered in the course and for successfully completing the associated assessments. TEACHING METHODS The course will be delivered through lectures, with a constant focus on encouraging requests for clarification and further study. RESETTING THE EXAM: Students may take the exams, subject to proper registration, without restrictions in all official exam sessions. Under no circumstances will exams be taken outside of these sessions. Students who fail the exam more than once are advised to schedule an appointment with their instructor to develop better study strategies. ASSESSMENT METHODS The written exam will consist of open-ended and open-ended questions, and will also include a clinical case discussion. A positive assessment will be based on: knowledge acquired through independent study of the indicated material; the ability to argue this knowledge; and the appropriateness of the language used. The written exam will last 90 minutes.
