OVERVIEW

A broad overview of the main sports-related traumatic injuries is necessary for a complete education of a master's student in sports science, as they may encounter these injuries or their functional consequences in their professional work, which can affect the technical dynamics of each sport.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the teaching is to know the main joint, muscular, capsuloligamentous, bone traumas, of simple and complex characteristics in the various contact and non-contact sports activities, analyzing the pathogenetic mechanisms also in relation to external factors.

Outline an appropriate nosographic framework for the main sports-related traumatic conditions according to the professional profile of a Master's graduate in Sports Motor Sciences, with a specific focus on the functional consequences of these conditions, highlighting for each trauma category the pathogenesis, the cause of the trauma, the main orthopedic and rehabilitation treatments, and the resulting return-to-sport process.

PREREQUISITES

The knowledge held by the student was at least partially acquired during their bachelor's degree, at least in its general framework. Therefore, this knowledge will be recalled and then deepened according to the specific objectives of this subject in the master's program.

TEACHING METHODS

Face-to-face presentation lessons and constant discussion during them, with exchanging information, clarifications, summaries, etc.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Overview of the subject  
Alerts at work in sports activity  
Principles of functional biomechanics of the major joints targeted by injuries  
Concept of trauma, microtrauma, and functional overload  
Risk factors for traumatic events (training, equipment, surfaces, etc.)  
Basics of traumatology: bruises, sprains, dislocations, fractures  
Tendon and muscle injuries  
Systematics of sports traumatology: hip, knee, ankle-foot, shoulder, and spine, related to major sports (skiing, soccer, basketball, volleyball, etc.)  
Notes on orthoses and braces for the trunk and joints.

Handout: Pathologies of the Locomotor System - Luigi Molfetta - Pacini Publisher, which basically represents in a descriptive way what is shown in the slides to make learning easier.
