Through a practical, case-based approach, it provides the essential tools to recognize life-threatening situations, activate the emergency medical system appropriately, and perform basic life-saving interventions, including basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation. AIMS AND CONTENT AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES Knowledge and understanding Students will acquire the knowledge required for the initial clinical assessment and basic management of patients in emergency situations. In particular: - Principles of first aid and organization of the emergency medical system. - Pathophysiological basis of major medical and traumatic emergencies. - Principles and algorithms of Basic Life Support and Defibrillation (BLSD). - Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques and use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). - Principles of rescuer safety and application of standardized emergency protocols. Applying knowledge and understanding and practical skills At the end of the course, students will be able to: - Promptly recognize signs and symptoms suggestive of major emergency conditions (trauma, dyspnea, chest pain, neurological impairment, intoxication, and shock). - Perform a structured initial assessment of the emergency patient. - Correctly activate the emergency medical system and apply principles of rescue safety. - Apply BLSD algorithms in simulated practical scenarios. - Correctly perform chest compressions and rescue ventilations according to current recommendations. - Safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED). - Place a patient in the recovery position. - Perform the main airway obstruction relief manoeuvres in adults. TEACHING METHODS The course is divided into 18 hours of theoretical lectures plus 1.5-hours practical exercises in small groups of a maximum of 8 students for the practical part (BLS-D). Any Student with documented Specific Learning Disorders (SLD), or with any special needs, shall reach out to the Lecturer(s) and to the dedicated SLD Representative in the Department before class begins, in order to liase and arrange the specific teaching methods and ensure proper achievement of the learning aims and outcomes. ASSESSMENT METHODS Learning assessment is based on a final written examination consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions to be completed within 40 minutes. The examination aims to assess the acquisition of knowledge related to the initial assessment and management of major medical and traumatic emergencies, principles of first aid, organization of the emergency medical system, and basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to recognize emergency conditions and identify appropriate initial interventions. Attendance at the practical BLS-D training session is mandatory and required to obtain course certification. Attendance at teaching activities is mandatory. Course certification is automatically granted to students holding a valid BLSD certification, upon appropriate documentation. In this case, attendance at the course activities and practical training sessions is not required. FURTHER INFORMATION The teacher receives by appointment
