AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide the foundations of the history of deviance and marginality in Italy in the 19th and 20th centuries. The historical constructions of deviant categories in the context of security policies and public order control will be investigated. The crystallization of the collective imagination in relation to the marginalization and criminalization of diversity will be explored, also from a gender and childhood history perspective. Negative paradigmatic conceptions of otherness will be taken into consideration, with particular reference to delinquency, psychiatry, poverty and political dissidence.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Educational objectives

  • Comprehend the fundamental stages of the historical evolution of the concepts of marginality and deviance in the contemporary era.
  • Gain knowledge of the primary historical-interpretative models of deviance.
  • Understand the origins and functions of total institutions and carceral systems, such as almshouses, asylums, and prisons.
  • Critically analyze the relationship between marginality and repression.
  • Problematize the historical processes of the pathologization of deviance.
  • Establish connections between the historical framework and gender stereotypes related to deviance.
  • Understand the impact of stigma and social labeling on identity construction.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • recognize, from a historical perspective, the various figures of marginality and deviance (e.g., the so-called alienated, vagrants, criminals, beggars, prostitutes, the poor, alcoholics, and inmates), contextualizing them within their respective social contexts.
  • identify the salient features of stereotypes/anti-prototypes.
  • identify and problematize the factors underlying the historical genesis of antisocial behavior.
  • clearly and accurately present the content learned using historical language.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of 18 hours of in-person lectures (3 CFU) utilizing multimedia resources and expert guest lectures.

Attendance is not mandatory, but strongly recommended.

In the event of weather alerts, teaching may be conducted synchronously via the Teams platform (access code: 4c8diti)

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The program emphasizes the intersections between criminology, the social history of psychiatry, and the history of institutions between the 19th and 20th centuries. Historical methods by which medicine and jurisprudence addressed deviance, juvenile delinquency, homosexuality, and alcoholism will be analyzed, with a specific focus on the Fascist regime.

The first part of the course focuses on the evolution of scientific discourses, including studies on criminal heredity and the influence of Lombrosian theories. The second part examines specific figures and social phenomena through a gender perspective. Overall, the course offers a comprehensive overview of the history of deviance, social marginality, and the repression of dissent through reclusive apparatuses and the application of psychiatric science.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students are invited to consult the teaching page (http://www.aulaweb.unige.it/) where all the information and teaching materials will be published.

At the beginning of lessons, the possibility of taking an ongoing written test dedicated ONLY to attending students will be agreed.

For students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (DSA).

Students with disabilities or DSA are reminded that in order to request adaptations during the exam, they must first enter the certification on the University website on the servizionline.unige.it page in the "Students" section. The documentation will be verified by the University's Services Sector for the inclusion of students with disabilities and DSA (https://rubrica.unige.it/strutture/structure/100111).

Subsequently, significantly in advance (at least 10 days) of the exam date, it is necessary to send an e-mail to the teacher with whom you will take the exam, inserting in copy copy both the teacher in charge of the School for the inclusion of students with disabilities and with DSA (laura.traverso@unige.it) is the Sector indicated above using one of the following addresses (disabili@unige.it; dsa@unige.it).

In the email you must specify:
• the name of the course
• the date of the appeal
• the student's surname, name and student number
• the compensatory tools and dispensatory measures deemed functional and required.

The contact person (Prof. Laura Traverso) will confirm to the teacher that the applicant has the right to request adaptations during the exam and that these adaptations must be agreed with the teacher. The teacher will respond by communicating whether it is possible to use the requested adaptations.

Requests must be sent at least 10 days before the date of the exam in order to allow the teacher to evaluate the content. In particular, if you intend to use concept maps for the exam (which must be much more concise than the maps used for the study) if the sending does not respect the expected times there will not be the technical time necessary to make any changes that may be requested by the teacher.

For further information regarding the request for services and adaptations, consult the document: Guidelines for requesting services, compensatory tools and/or dispensatory measures and specific aids
