TEACHING MATERIALS AULAWEB

OVERVIEW

The module will consist of 40 hours of lessons dealing with landslide phenomena and related hazard. The aim is to provide basic skills concerning landslide classification, investigation, mapping, monitoring, slope stability assessment along with the basic approaches to landslide susceptibility zoning at different spatial scales

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main purpose of the module is to provide the fundamental concepts about landslide classification, investigation, mapping and monitoring and on the basic approaches to assess slope stability and landslide susceptibility at different spatial scales. Students will acquire theoretical and practical skills to apply in the framework of landslide risk mitigation.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The module aims at providing the fundamental concepts of slope stability and landslide hazard. Upon completion of the module, the student will be able to:

- recognize and describe the main factors controlling the occurrence of landslides;

- identify and characterize the most common landslide mechanisms;

- define the most appropriate landslide investigation and monitoring techniques;

- select and evaluate the most appropriate basic approaches for landslide susceptibility analysis and mapping;

- select and evaluate the basic approaches to deal with landslide risk mitigation issues;

- use the appropriate terminology employed in the field of landslide and slope stability studies.

TEACHING METHODS

The module is based on lectures, tutorials, and case studies. Lectures are delivered through multimedia presentations.

Attendance at lectures is recommended.

Students with valid certifications for Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs), disabilities or other educational needs are invited to contact the teacher and the School's contact person for disability at the beginning of teaching to agree on possible teaching arrangements that, while respecting the teaching objectives, take into account individual learning patterns. Contacts of the School's disability contact person can be found at the following link Comitato di Ateneo per l’inclusione delle studentesse e degli studenti con disabilità o con DSA | UniGe | Università di Genova

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The module covers following topics:

- Characterization of landslide types and processes: landslide mechanisms and landslide classification.

- Landslide predisposing and triggering factors.

- Landslide kinematics and states of activity, slope failure evolution.

- Landslide investigation, detection and mapping.

- Slope monitoring.

- Basic principles of slope stability.

- Definition of landslide hazard, landslide susceptibility and landslide risk.

- Methods for landslide susceptibility assessment and zoning in relation to different spatial scales.

- Landslide risk reduction strategies.

- Basic notions of landslide stabilization and mitigation measures.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The examination consists of an oral assessment based on three main questions covering the topics addressed during the module.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Details on the examination requirements and the expected level of knowledge for each topic will be provided during the lectures.

The oral examination is aimed at assessing the student's ability to address basic issues related to landslide identification and characterization, slope stability analysis, landslide susceptibility assessment, and landslide risk mitigation. The student's ability to present concepts clearly using appropriate technical terminology, as well as their capacity for critical reasoning, will also be evaluated.

FURTHER INFORMATION

Students are encouraged to contact the lecturer for any additional information not included in the course syllabus.
