It addresses issues related to structural schemes, the calculation of design loads under different operating assumptions, the sizing of structural elements, and safety verifications (according to Italian standards and Eurocodes). The second part extends the discussion of the calculation and design methods already examined for reinforced concrete structures to prestressed concrete structures. In particular, the various aspects of prestressing technologies and the different stages of safety verification are discussed. Applications are presented and design examples are developed. TEACHING METHODS Lectures and exercises SYLLABUS/CONTENT Relying on the theoretical information provided by Structural Engineering I (last year of the Batchelor course), the course provides the fundamentals of Structural Design of r.c. structures taking into account the building technology and the standard procedures of the construction sites. The approach makes use of a global point of view in which the structure is looked as an assemblage of the structural elements studied in the previous course. In this section: i) the mechanical characterization of the building materials and of structures; ii) legal issues related to the professionals involved in the building process; iii) load tests are also discussed. The course has no specific exercise section since the lessons connect directly examples and applications to the theoretical themes discussed.
