AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to provide students with historical notions and the critical and methodological skills to understand and contextualize the topic of graphics production, going back to its very first appearance and analyzing its various developments throughout history. During the course, the main concepts and theories will be discussed, as well as the different definitions of the concepts of publishing and advertising graphics, according to various historical and conventional norms depicting the different cultural environments through which the various currents and products developed.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to help students achieve critical autonomy in the analysis of graphic expressions from different historical periods. Results are assessed according to students' ability to critically examine some emblematic examples.

TEACHING METHODS

The course offers a critical reading of the evolution of graphic design throughout the centuries, with particular reference to advertising graphics. Each lesson specifies cultural references and analyzes key case studies.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

  • Introduction and presentation course- information about what to develop and how to prepare the final examination.
  • The origins of communication graphics – fundamentals and main temporal and cultural references.
  • Graphics and new media – the different vectors and their characteristics – the spreading of "dynamic" communications – examples and critical readings.
  • Graphic for Communication and Art (part 1) – main historical periods and exemplifications – critical readings.
  • Graphic for Communication and Art  (part 2)– main historical periods and exemplifications – critical readings
  • The case-study of the manifesto – examples and critical readings
  • The case-study of the photo montage
  • Graphics and cities – the main changes in the contemporary context – examples and critical readings
  • Check of the works made by students
  • Graphics and Society – the main changes in the contemporary context – the international landscape – the legislation and the resulting design choices – exemplifications and critical readings.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam includes the presentation of a critical reading on a historical advertising poster of the student's choice, and a subsequent discussion to verify the knowledge acquired.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The exam tests the ability to recognize the salient elements of a graphic composition and to identify its historical context.
