The course explores the principles of architectural composition and the historical evolution of the building organism as a framework for design activity. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The module explores in depth the aspects related to the historical evolution of architectural form, with particular reference to residential buildings and to the relationships between spatial distribution, building typology, and architectural composition. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to develop advanced knowledge of the theoretical foundations of architectural design and their critical application. By the end of the course, students will be able to: interpret the relationships between building typology, functional distribution, and spatial configuration; critically analyse and interpret architectural case studies; understand compositional principles and their role in shaping architectural projects; apply theoretical tools to support and justify design decisions. PREREQUISITES Students are expected to be familiar with the fundamental principles of architectural representation and technical drawing. Basic knowledge of architectural history and introductory architectural design is recommended. TEACHING METHODS Teaching activities include lectures, thematic seminars, discussion of case studies, and collective review sessions. Additional analytical exercises and independent study activities may be assigned. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course addresses: theoretical foundations of architectural design; the historical evolution of the architectural organism; relationships between typology, function, and form; principles of architectural composition; analysis of significant architectural works and case studies; the relationship between architecture, construction, and spatial use. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY The reading list will be provided by the instructor at the beginning of the course and updated throughout the semester. References will include texts on architectural design theory, architectural history, architectural composition, and selected case studies.
