AIMS AND CONTENT

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

• Describe the structural organization of prokaryotic and eukaryotic genomes;

• Explain the molecular mechanisms of DNA replication and the major pathways involved in genome maintenance and DNA repair;

• Describe the flow of genetic information from DNA to proteins through transcription and translation;

• Distinguish the main mechanisms regulating gene expression in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms;

• Explain the role of epigenetic regulation in controlling gene expression;

• Interpret the molecular mechanisms underlying genome evolution and their contribution to the genetic and phenotypic diversity of plant and animal species relevant to food production

TEACHING METHODS

Teaching consists of classroom lectures supported by multimedia presentations

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Oral examination

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The oral examination is aimed at assessing:

• knowledge of the main molecular mechanisms governing the maintenance, transmission and expression of genetic information;

• the ability to understand and integrate the biological processes covered during the course;

• the ability to interpret the role of these mechanisms in biological variability, genome evolution and the characteristics of plant and animal species of agro-food interest;

• the appropriate use of scientific terminology.
