Sanskrit is one of the most important Indo-European languages, which reflects the PIE culture as well the history of ancient India. Its knowledge enables us to acquire the foundations of Indo-European reconstruction.
The course aims to: - introduce students to the knowledge of Sanskrit grammar, in particular in its most ancient phase (Vedic); - encourage the acquisition of the basic methodology for the critical analysis of Vedic texts and the reading of hymns and prose through the analysis of the texts in the original language; - start a comparison between selected texts and passages with Greek and Latin analogues; - retrace the history of the so-called "Indo-European poetic language" from a comparative perspective; - know the main moments of ancient Indian literature with particular regard to Vedism and the epic; - develop the ability to conduct a guided reading of texts, to use Sanskrit dictionaries and understand the lemmatization criteria, to use the TITUS electronic corpus; - deepen, through direct comparison and always in the original language, the knowledge of comparative elements between Indian, Latin and Greek traditions; - develop the ability to correctly reconstruct Indo-European poetic formulas according to the linguistic and cultural method of the Italian and German school.
