The course is focused on the analysis of ship structures in terms of stresses generated by local and global actions and of scantlings
The course aims at providing concepts and procedures for the identification of the main loads insisting on ship structures.
Aim of the course is to explain criteria for the strength verification of ship structural elements and to provide the student with means for a quantification of loads with direct computations as well as with Class Societies formulations. Reference structural models are recalled and concepts and procedures are described for the identification of actions and and the quantification of loads and stresses acting on the structure in the main verification situations. Particular attention is devoted to the primary structure of the hull, to global loads and to the static response in linear field.
In addition, the global strength of the hull is covered also with non-linear computations of the ultimate limit state in bending and the dynamic response is treated in terms of bending vibrations of the hull girder and to the propagation of noise and vibrations on board.
Fundamental knowledge corresponds to the content of base courses (Mathematics, Geometry, Physics and Chemistry). Without these contents, the present course cannot be effectively understood nor the exam passed. Further, the knowledge of the contents of the following courses is mandatory:

The exam is composed of two parts: written and oral
written/numerical exercise to be done in 15 minutes: simple numerical exercise. Electronic aids are not suggested. At the end, the student shall be able to quickly report results verbally
Theoretical oral exam 2-3 questions on any topic covered in the course and/or on the reports of the exercises carried out during the lectures (abt 30 min in total)
The written part will allow to check the capacity of executing simple computations on the load distributions
The oral part is devoted to checking the knowledge of base concepts regarding the definition of global and local loads acting on ship structures and of their scantlings.
Parameter for the evaluation of the candidate are: quality of the presentation, correct use of the specific wording, capacity of logical presentation of concepts and of critical reasoning.
