CODE 55842 ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 1 LINGUE E CULTURE MODERNE 8740 (L-11) - SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR L-LIN/15 TEACHING LOCATION SEMESTER 1° Semester OVERVIEW This course consists of 36 hours, divided into three teaching hours per week, corresponding to 6 ECTS. It will take place from October to January. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES This course aims to introduce the students to the different aspects of cultural and literary history of the Nordic countries, while highlighting elements of uniformity and differentiation among them and, furthermore, in relation to the rest of the European cultural world. TEACHING METHODS 36 hours of traditional lessons. Further activities will be indicated during the course. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Scandinavian literature and culture from the origins to Naturalism This course aims to illustrate the main stages in the cultural evolution of the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland) from both a literary, a historical and a social point of view, starting from Scandinavian pre-history and concluding in 1880s. Cultural trends, main authors and the most significant works from each period will be therefore presented, while highlighting the elements which distinguish the Scandinavian area and, at the same time, its relationship with other European literary and cultural traditions. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY Students are expected to know the contents of the lessons, including all the texts which will be examined during the course, and will have to read a number of Scandinavian works (eight from six authors). The exam will last about half an hour and is meant to test both the knowledge of the programme (contents of the lessons, texts analysed and readings) and the reasoning skills. The accuracy in the use of specific language of the discipline will be taken into account. Students will be, moreover, asked to choose a single subject of the programme and make personal researches on it for the oral examination. The examination, as well as the course, will be thoroughly in Italian.
