OVERVIEW

This course consists of 36 hours, divided into three teaching hours per week, corresponding to 6 ECTS. It will take place from October to January.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course aims to introduce the students to the different aspects of cultural and literary history of the Nordic countries, while highlighting elements of uniformity and differentiation among them and, furthermore, in relation to the rest of the European cultural world.

TEACHING METHODS

36 hours of traditional lessons. Further activities will be indicated during the course.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Scandinavian literature and culture from the origins to Naturalism

This course aims to illustrate the main stages in the cultural evolution of the Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland) from both a literary, a historical and a social point of view, starting from Scandinavian pre-history and concluding in 1880s. Cultural trends, main authors and the most significant works from each period will be therefore presented, while highlighting the elements which distinguish the Scandinavian area and, at the same time, its relationship with other European literary and cultural traditions.

RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY

Students are expected to know the contents of the lessons, including all the texts which will be examined during the course, and will have to read a number of Scandinavian works (eight from six authors).

For details about the programme, the reading list and all the material for students who can't attend the lessons, please contact me at davide.finco@unige.it.
