*Title: Experimentation and Crisis of Representation in Modernism Through the analysis of some literary texts students will have the opportunity to investigate various examples of Modernist crisis of representation and experimentation. Particular attention will be given to the influence of the visual arts and music on literary texts.
The course aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of British literature and culture from the Renaissance to the present age with special emphasis on the development of modern fiction, post-colonial studies, twentieth-century modernism and post-modernism.
Students who attend this course regularly, and study the prescribed materials, will acquire a detailed knowledge of some aspects of European Modernism in an inderdisciplinary perspective. They will be able to analyse a number of British literary texts, describe their main formal features and connect them to specific historical and cultural contexts.
Interactive lectures in italian, a few workshops on specific themes and individual or tearm reports (if some students are interested in them). Attendance is highly reccommended. There will be a special programme for students who cannot attend.
This course provides the students with an introduction to the study of European Modernism, with particular attention to the British culture and literature. The first part of the course will offer an historical-cultural survey of the main artistic revolutions at the beginning of the 20th century, with reference to the visual arts, music, dance and literature. The remaining lectures will analyze some literary texts (mainly short stories) by British, Irish and New Zealand 20th century writers, discussing their radical experimentation.
A collection of short stories by D.H. Lawrence, V. Woolf, K. Mansfield, and James Joyce edited by Stefania Michelucci will be available at Copycolor, Copyshop Via Balbi, near Genoa Piazza Principe Station and in the Department library at the beginning of the course. At the exam students are expected to know the history of 20th century British literature. Some reference texts will be provided at the beginning of the course. A knowledge of the European avant-garde (Impressionism, Post-impressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, Vorticism) is also required.

This course is assessed by written examination. Language of examination: Italian or English (students can choose). The exam paper covers all parts of the syllabus.
The exam paper involves open questions and guided commentary of literary texts. The open questions test knowledge and comprehension; the guided commentary tests the student's ability to recognise and describe the main formal features of specific texts, and connect them to contextual historical and cultural information; it also tests the student's comprehension of, and ability to respond to, critical essays included in the reading list.
Attendance is strongly recommended. Students who are unable to attend, will have to study some supplementary or different material. Enrolment in the course via aulaweb is mandatory.
This programme expires at the end of February 2018.
Some students might be interested in a personal or group research on a theme suggested by the teacher. At the end of the course their oral report will be planned. It substitutes part of the written exam.
