OVERVIEW

The course explores a variety of different themes within sociology of deviance and aims to encourage students to move beyond a mere theoretical approach to deviance and control in order to comprehend their public representation in movies and media communication.

The course aims at outlining the main theoretical approaches developed by the
sociology of deviance, particularly focusing on the processes of selective
criminalization and its representation in media production

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • study independently and self-manage learning;
  • develope a critical evaluation of academic ideas as translated into the public discourses, such as cinema and media.
  • develope observational and analytical skills in media communication on deviance and control.

TEACHING METHODS

Combination of traditional lectures (approx.20 hours), tutorials and classroom discussions of video and assignments presented by working groups of students (approx. 16 hours).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The first part of the course will analyse the main theories on deviance and socal control and develop a critical evaluation of academic ideas as translated into the real-world environment.

The second part of the course will focus on structure and working practices on deviance and control, concentrating specifically  on the processes of selective criminalization of migrant and marginal people and their representation in media production.

Student will be encouraged to work together on group projects and to develop skills in critical reading and analysis of deviance and social control rapresentation through a variety of different media.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam will be consist of a brief essay (of approx. 3000 word) on a topic of student’s choosing, to be discussed with course tutor in advance.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The course assessment will be made up of tutorials and classroom discussions of assignments presented by working groups of students.
