The course introduces the basic concepts of Sociolinguistics applied to Spanish and Spanish American Dialectology, also from a historical perspective. The features of oral colloquial Spanish will also be covered.
The course aims at encouraging learners' autonomy in research and problem-solving on Applied Linguistics topics, using lexical and terminological resources, oral and written corpora, morphological data banks, Combinatory Linguistics, etc.
The course provides an advanced understanding of dialect variation in European and American Spanish, with special emphasis on origin, social and historical factors involved and language features. The differences between oral and written communication will also be dealt with, focusing on colloquial Spanish. Special emphasis will be placed on research and problem-solving activities using virtual and paper resources.

Oral exam
The exam will consist of the oral discussion of a short paper written in Spanish by the students on a theoretical or practical topic included in the syllabus. The assessment will take into account familiarity with the contents of the bibliographical references and the ability to apply them both in terms of critical reflection and of analysis of texts or transcriptions of interactions in Spanish.
