OVERVIEW

This module includes an introduction to Modern English (from Early Modern English to English as a Lingua Franca) and a practical English language course at the C2.1 level.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

This module aims to

- provide students with a basic knowledge of the history of English from Early Modern English to Present-day English;

- provide students with a basic knowledge of some of the worldwide varieties of English (i.e. so-called 'Englishes');

- enable students to discuss the role of English as a Lingua Franca (vs. English as a Foreign Language).

TEACHING METHODS

The linguistics module is made up of weekly lectures (3 hours a week over 10 weeks in the second semester).

The practical module is made up of weekly classes (4 hours a week over 20 weeks, i.e. 10 weeks per semester).

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

English Language II (LM) is divided into two parts, a one-semester linguistics module ("modulo teorico") and a two-semester practical module ("modulo pratico" or "esercitazioni" o "lettorato").

The linguistics module ("modulo teorico") is an introduction to the History of English from Early Modern English to English as a Lingua Franca. The practical language module aims to bring students to the C2.1 (upper end of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages C1 level). EXAM DESCRIPTION

Each component ("modulo pratico" and "modulo teorico") is assessed separately. The practical module is assessed at the end of the second semester through a written exam paper (grammar, vocabulary, listening, and writing). The linguistics module is assessed through a written exam paper at the end of the second semester.

The final mark is calculated as follows:

50% (of the overall mark) is the practical part.
