OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of telecommunication networks, intended as interconnection of devices, and of the Internet. The objective is to present the different technological solutions for the design, implementation and verification of modern telecommunications networks. The course will define the basic concepts of a tlc network and of the Internet, the main data link levels and the protocols used over the Internet.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Basic principles of the telecommunication networks. Multiplexing. Circuit switching, packet switching . Functional architectures and protocols. Internet architecure. Application , transport and network layers. Data link layer. Wired and wireless LAN .

LEARNING OUTCOMES (FURTHER INFO)

After completing the course the student will have acquired the basic skills required to evaluate, design and check the main elements of a modern telecommunications network and of the Internet.

In particular, the following aspects will be studied: structure and classification of a telecommunications network. Circuit switching and description of the telephone network structure. Structure of the Internet and TCP / IP networks, definition of the main Internet interconnection elements: hubs, switches, routers, gateways, terminals. Main data link layers: 802.3-Ethernet, IEEE 802.11, HDLC, Point to Point Protocol (PPP). Internet protocols: IP, TCP, UDP and IP addressing scheme.

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures integrated by laboratory trials.
