Representation is the language that communicates architectural content, using both traditional and digital instruments. Descriptive Geometry is the grammar of this language and gives information on the different methods of representation of three-dimensional space on the plane. These methods consist of conical projection (perspective) and cylindrical projection (orthogonal projections, axonometry and level curves).
The course aims to provide students with a solid grounding in the scientific methods of representation and interpretation of architectural drawing. The history of representation complements any analysis of scientific methods. These methods create an essential link with the past so enabling students to understand how to use drawing appropriately, both with traditional and digital tools.
Teaching will consist of lectures and drawing practice. Lessons summaries will be available in Italian and English. Foreign students will receive support in English during the lessons. Optional practical work on one of the subject areas will be recognized with a reduction in the syllabus.
The course covers the following subjects: - Drawing, image and model - Drawing as a language to communicate and interpret form - Architectural drawing: conventions and types of drawing and images - Project and Survey Drawing - Elements of Projective Geometry applied to Descriptive Geometry - Methods of representation of three-dimensional space on the plane (perspective, orthogonal projections, axonometry and level curves) - Theory of shadows - Representation of curved lines and surfaces - Reverse-perspective constructions - Applications to digital drawing and modeling - History of representation

The final examination is made up of two steps: a written and an oral examination. The written exam contains theoretical question and practical application of representation methods. Intermediate texts during the year may substitute the written exam. The oral exam consists of discussion of the topics and presentation of the drawing produced by the student.
