OVERVIEW

RIABILITAZIONE IN ORTOPEDIA E TRAUMATOLOGIA I

The module “RIABILITAZIONE IN ORTOPEDIA E TRAUMATOLOGIA I” develops a thorough understanding of the human body, what happens when injuries occur and how to treat and manage them. The unit aims to provide students with the knowledge of the traumatized patient's healing process, to define an appropriate rehabilitation action according to the biomedical and psycho-social model.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

AIMS AND CONTENT

The aim of the class is to deliver the basic scientific knowledge to interpret the trauma recovery to improve the quality of life for the patient on a daily basis and to describe the right rehabilitation based on ICF model.

To achieve this, it is important to monitor for signs and symptoms of the patient, to know the main measurement rehabilitation scales, to know how to decline the rehabilitation treatment according to the patient's clinical history.

The discipline leads the student to learn about the principles and objectives of rehabilitation in problems concerning the locomotor system to get effective relief of edema, pain, range of motion recovery, muscle strength and function; also, it allows them to know and apply the instrumental physical therapy, and be able to observe the diagnostic artifacts in images.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to provide students the ability to understand and solve issues related to:

  1. Know the trauma recovery of the patient to set up the right physiotherapy based on the bio-psyco-social model;
  2. Practice the right physiotherapy for the right rehabilitation phase;
  3. Know the rehabilitation goals in the main problems based on skeletal apparatus: aedema, pain, weakness, less of ROM and function, such as standing and walking;
  4. Know the importance of the formulation of an individualized rehabilitation plan and evaluation of its effectiveness;
  5. Know the main clinical assessment scales;
  6. Know about Imaging to identify the main physioterapic controindications;
  7. Describe the fundamental aspects of the main physical processes, and know the indications/controindications about Instrumental Therapy.

TEACHING METHODS

TEACHING METHODS

Lectures (20 hours).

Lectures are performed in all the teaching location by owners teachers and are explained with slides and videos. The Students/Teachers percentage report allows a direct comparison and an use of collaborative methodology, discussion about rehabilitation and working groups.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

CONTENT

The main phases of the rehabilitation process in Orthopaedic and Traumatology:

  • Method:
    a. Place the rehabilitation question in the patient's medical history: rehabilitation after conservative or surgical treatment, pre-operative rehabilitation training, management of outcomes, home care program etc.
    b. Clinical documentation: literature, guidelines and rehabilitation protocols

          c. Know how to observe the diagnostic artifacts in Images to identify indications and contraindications of therapeutic.

  • Main goals in Orthopaedic and Traumatologic Rehabilitation:
  1. After immobilization and post chirurgical phases: lesions of the tissue and prevention of swelling, adherence and retraction; early mobilization; prevention of the main complicances
  2. The recovery phase of range of motion, active movements, load and gait: prevention and treatment of joint stiffness.
  3. The reinforcing phase and the resumption of normal activities: recovery protocols for strength and dexterity.
  4. The treatment phase of joint instability.
  5. The management of functional outcomes: therapeutic treatment for soft tissue injuries, preparation for re-interventions, ADL and aids, prevention of deformities. Improve patient mobility and enhance both his independence and quality of life.
  • Instrumental Therapy: physical and therapeutic effects; main selection and use of Instrumental Therapy:
    a. Electrotherapy:
  • Electrical stimulation:  the effect of innervation, denervation, and muscle type: the precise stimulus to work the muscle as much and as efficiently as desired (Kotz, Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and so on)

·         b Electroanalgesia: definition, technology  and indications; Gate control and TENS Therapy, Interferential

  1. Ultrasound
  2. Electromagnetic radiation: pulsed short wave diathermy, Infrared, UVA/B/C, Soft Laser, Magnetic field
  3. ESWT (Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy) and Tecar therapy
  4. Thermal therapy and Thalassotherapy
