    The course aims to promote critical awareness about the interpretation and the tools for the transformation of the urban field.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The aim of the course is the student's acquiring consciousness of the transformation processes affecting the city and the territory and the methods to analyze and govern them developed by the "town and country planning" discipline point of view. The course provides the basic knowledge about theories and planning practices for the interpretation and transfornation of the contemporary city.

    AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The student will achieve the ability to:

    • Interpret and analyze urban and territorial systems at different scales; 
    • Achieve analytical skills in order to processes of formation and transformation of the city (and urban field)  through the historical reconstruction of the spatial, social, economic, technological issues that represent the basis of the urban phenomenon.
    • Knowing the structural mechanisms of urban and regional plans through knowledge of their historical evolution;
    • Knowing the technical methods and understand the formal language, used by planes to represent the structure of the city and territories and govern their transformations.

    Lectures, exercises, guided tours.

    SYLLABUS/CONTENT

    A.City and territory history.

    Origin and development of the city. Cities and government. Urban form and structure of the city and the territory, in their historical development. The case of Genoa. Genoa and other cities in their historical and urban development.

    B. Urban theories.

    Main theories about the city and its organization. Town and regional planning between technology, art and government.

    C. The urban phenomenon in the contemporary world and models for interpreting it.

    Elements of urban and regional economy and geography. Urban models.

    D. From land to plan.

    Land, localization and urban form. Private land: the problem of regulation. The public land. The project of public spaces. Land use and land management.

    E. Technical elements in town planning

    The regulatory model: types of urban plans. The municipal development plan. Parameters, indices and standards. Case studies. Innovation in urban planning: the new planning tools. 

    F. City, territory and environment.

    The environmental crisis. Sustainability, resilience, equity. From the evaluation of sustainability to the SEA. From the city to the territory: city, territory, landscape. Regional and landscape planning.

    EXAM DESCRIPTION

    Students are required to produce 3 exercises:

    Recognition of an urban tissue (case study: Genoa)
    Reading a classic text of urbanism / town planning
    Design simulation of an area plan

    The oral exam will focus on a discussion of the produced cards and about the topics covered in class.
