OVERVIEW

86667 – POWER SYSTEMS SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION

Scientific domain: ING-IND/33 Electric Power Systems

European Credit Transfer System Credits (ECTS): 6

Year: Second year of the M.Sc. in Energy Engineering

Lessons schedule: according to Polytechnic School timetable

Lecturer: STEFANO BRACCO

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course is designed to provide the students the theoretical and methodological skills necessary for the development of power system simulation and optimization models. The goals of this course are to provide the students the capabilities related to modelling different power system technologies in off-design and transient operating conditions, through the use of dedicated software, and to developing optimization mathematical models to design and manage distributed generation plants and smart grids.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The main purpose of the course is to provide students competences on the development of power system optmization and simulation tools, with a particular focus on distributed energy facilities and smart grids. Students will acquire skills to develop mathematical models for the simulation of the behaviour of power plants in off-design and transient conditions. Moreover, students will be able to develop optimization models to design and daily operate smart grids and smart microgrids, also benefitting from experimental activities carried on at the Smart Polygeneration Microgrid of the Savona Campus. Competences on electric storage systems and electric mobility will be also acquired.

TEACHING METHODS

The course is based on theoretical lectures, solution of case problems and computer aided exercises.

Exercises will be also done in the laboratory of the Smart Polygeneration Microgrid of the Savona Campus.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

- Development of mathematical models to simulate the behaviour of power plants in off-design (partial loads) and transient operating conditions
