AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES To provide basic theoretical knowledge of electrical and electronic devices: behavior of circuits in transient and in steady state operation, measures of voltage, current and power; operation of electrical machineries, electronic devices and logic circuits; schematic diagrams and energy balance on board. TEACHING METHODS 60 hours theory lectures SYLLABUS/CONTENT Lumped circuits. Definition of lumped circuits and elements. Voltage and current. Resistivity and resistance, Ohm’s law. Characteristic curve of ideal lumped element. Lumped circuits analysis. Kirchhoff’s current law (KCL) and Kirchhoff’s voltage law (KVL). Circuit analysis. Superposition method, mesh and node anaysis. Thevenin and Norton equivalent network. Numerical analysis example. Associated reference directions, power and energy. Transient in electrical circuits. Linear capacitor and inductor charge and discharge. Sinusoidal steady state analysis. Alternating voltage and current. Peak and root mean square value. Effective value and phasors. Impedance and admittance. Sinusoidal steady state response calculated by the phasor method. Power and electric energy in A.C. circuits. Real or active power, reactive power, apparent power and complex power. Three-phase systems: star and triangle connection. Electrical measurement. Voltage, current, power measurements in AC and DC circuits. Electronic devices and amplifiers. Introduction to semiconductors, diodes, BJT transistors, amplifiers, gain and distortion. Operational amplifiers. Digital circuits and Boolean algebra. Logic gates. AND-OR and OR-AND logic synthesis. Electrical machineries. AC and DC generators, AC and DC motors, transformers and converters. Marine electrical systems design. Power and energy balance on board.
