OVERVIEW

The course introduces students to the classical mechanics of point-particles and rigid bodies, and to the theory of electromagnetism in vacuum conditions.

AIMS AND CONTENT

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

1st MODULE

space and time; straight-line kinematics; motion in a plane; forces and equilibrium; Newton's laws; particle dynamics; collisions and conservation laws; work and potential energy; vibrational motion, conservative forces; inertial forces and non-inertial frames; central force motions; rigid bodies and rotational dynamics.

2nd MODULE

electrostatic fields and potential in free space; D.C. circuits; magnetic fields due to steady and varying currents; electromagnetic induction; Maxwell's equations.
