AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will furnish the means of formulating and solving local balances of material and heat, developing problem solving skills and becoming familiar with the study of local transport phenomena  in chemical and process engineering systems.

TEACHING METHODS

The course consists of theoretical lessons and practical exercises done in the classroom. In addition, educational visits as well as computer labs can be proposed.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

material and heat transport phenomena; notes on local momentum balances; calculation of mass diffusivity and thermal conductivity, laws of Fick, Fourier and Newton; analogy of transfer; examples of application in steady-state and unsteady-state conditions, on different geometries, with and without chemical reactions, in isothermal and non-isothermal systems; discussion of complex case studies and simplification criteria; notes on transport under turbulent regime; examples of analytical and numerical solutions of transport problems typical of the process engineering.

FURTHER INFORMATION

No formal prerequisites are required, but a productive learning requires knowledge base of mathematics, chemistry and physics, as well as the ability to set up and solve macroscopic balances and calculations of phase and reaction equilibrium.
