OVERVIEW

The course aims to provide students with the technical and methodological knowledge that will allow them to carry out a detailed architectural project based on the principles of sustainable design. Sustainability issues are examined in depth in terms of: historical evolution of the concepts of sustainability, environmental quality, applicability in the construction sector; technological solutions for effective sustainable design.

The course aims to provide students with the technical and methodological knowledge that will allow them to carry out a detailed architectural project based on the principles of sustainable design. Knowledge required by the construction sector in the contemporary national and international context.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The Sustainable Architecture Design course is structured to provide students with the following skills:

- a thorough understanding of the significance of climate change and the associated principles of sustainability and sustainable development in the construction sector;

- in-depth knowledge of "traditional" and innovative technologies for achieving the environmental, social and economic objectives of sustainable development in the construction sector;

- a high degree of ability to understand, analyse and design construction elements and entire structures where the achievement of sustainable development goals becomes essential.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The discipline of Sustainable Design for Architecture is investigated in its main aspects:

- Nature and construction;

- Sustainable development;

- Principles of sustainable design (environmental, typological and detailed technical construction);

- Sustainable building materials;

- Elements for sustainable construction;

- Requirements and performance for sustainable construction;

- Application of all the above topics to a real project in collaboration with public authorities and realities on new buildings or on the redevelopment of existing buildings or neighbourhoods.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Graphic and oral exam.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The graphic test consists in the development of a part of a sustainable project, in the part of a technical report and in the development of construction details having as object the achievement of sustainable aims from the environmental to the detailed level.

The oral exam consists of questions about the programme developed during the course to test the in-depth acquisition of skills related to sustainable design aspects for new and existing buildings to achieve sustainable environmental, social and economic objectives. In particular, the student's assessment is based on specific questions on the different topics covered, proposing detailed "applications" of materials, construction techniques and technological solutions. The student must demonstrate that he or she has acquired critical knowledge and skills in sustainable detail design.
