AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provides the basic knowledge on Earth’s dynamics and on the following main themes: tectonics, magmatism, metamorphism, sedimentation, lithostratigraphy in the various geodynamic environments. The course also provides the necessary practical background for recognition of the main tectonic and sedimentary structures in the field and for rock recognition and classification. TEACHING METHODS Frontal lessons and fieldwork. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The Concept of Geologic Time and the GTS. Rock cycle. Wilson cycle. Introduction to the sedimentary processes and sedimentary rocks. The Udden-Wentworth scales. Sedimentary rocks classification. Sedimentation surfaces, beds and laminae. Introduction to sedimentary structures. Deposition, accomodation space and subsidence. Walther law, facies, facies boundaries and associations. Unconformities. Transgression and regression. The laws of stratigraphy. Stratigraphic sections: types, measurement and description, lithostratigraphic correlation, stratigraphic cross section and fence diagrams. Formal Units. Introduction to nonmarine, transitional, and marine depositional environments. Exercises and field trip practice.
