OVERVIEW

Course on a single topic on the basis of the linguistic and literary competences acquired during the course of Romance Philology I.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course aims to give a complete picture of origins, structure and evolution of medieval romance languages, to increase the knowledge of the medieval romance literatures by reading vernacular texts, to provide the students with competences about the comparative study of medieval works and about textual criticism.

The course aims to give to the students these competences:

1 – the ability to read literary medieval texts in their original language,

2 – the ability to contextualize medieval works in the socioeconomical landscape in which they are written.

3  – the ability to do ado a full linguistic and rhetorical analysis on medieval texts.

Frontal classes with multimedia support

Seminar with dott. Martina di Febo.

Lessons’ attendance is highly recommended. If the lessons’ attendance is impossible, Students have to conctat professor to agree an additional textbook.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

The subject of the course is «Monsters and marvel of Ireland».

During the lessons will be analyzed medieval texts that describe it as a land full of wonders: monsters, marvels and miracles at the same time charming and horrifying, stunning and terrible that are bounded to become part of the european collective imagination to the present day. A land that was seen as the upper most expression of physical and material otherness, but also human and social, giving in addiction a good frame of reference of a political and religious nature.

The seminar held by dott. Martina di Febo about «The saint Patrick’s purgatory (prose vertions)» is an integral part of the course.
