    OVERVIEW

    This course provides the student with basic notions of linguistics and historical linguistics: phonetics, the International Phonetic Alphabet, the languages of Europe, with a focus on Indo-European languages and the comparative method.

    AIMS AND CONTENT

    LEARNING OUTCOMES

    The course is divided into two parts: General Linguistics and Historical Linguistics. The goal of the first part is to offer a basic knowledge of the structures and functions of linguistic expressions and their meanings. The goal of the second part is to provide the student with historical and linguistic notions useful to study European languages and cultures in a comparative perspective, with a focus on 1) languages spoken in Europe, 2) their boundaries and historical development, 3) the prehistoric language from which the majority of European languages derive, 4) the development of Germanic and Romance languages and literatures, 5) the origin and development of proper names.

    General Phonetics; use of IPA; languages of Europe; Indo-European; Romance and Germanic languages: an Introduction; oral vs. written: problems of transcription of European languages.
