A course In arabic clulture and literature I. 36 hours (all in the first semester)
The course aimes at offreing the basic notions of Arabic culture and literature through diachronic readings that pays particular attention to the socio-cultural dimentions of the beduine society, as well as to its artistic literary production forms. Within this topic, an attention will be paid to the birth and the progress of Al Islam with all its social, religious and artistic aspects.
Main examples of pre-Islamic poetry, early Islamic literary production and Quaranic prose production will be subject of deep study and analysis.
The course aimes at analysing arabic literature in the following periods:
1. The period of Jahiliyyah, that is the period of ignorance upto the arrival of Islam.
2. From the rise of Islam to the end of the Omayyadi dynasty.
Frontal lectures
The course presents Arabic literature from the pre-Islamic period to the dynasty of the Omayyadi:
A historical and geographical introduction of the peninsula arabica
A socio-cultural introduction of the centuries that preceeded Islam (V and VI century)
Pre-islamic poetic production: main poets, themes and poetic style
The most frequent themes: description, pride either personal or tribal, praise or eulogy, criticism, voyage, romantic prelude, memory recollection and wine
The arrival of Al Islam and its influence on poetry and literature in general
From multi- theme poem to one- theme poem
Poetry during the dynasty of the Omayyadi
New literary forms: prose, epistle, oratory or public speach, the profets’ proclations and announcements.
