CODE 57204 ACADEMIC YEAR 2017/2018 CREDITS 6 cfu anno 2 TEORIE E TECNICHE DELLA MEDIAZIONE INTERLINGUISTICA 8741 (L-12) - 6 cfu anno 1 TRADUZIONE E INTERPRETARIATO 8743 (LM-94) - SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINARY SECTOR L-LIN/02 LANGUAGE Italian TEACHING LOCATION SEMESTER 1° Semester OVERVIEW The course is in the first semester, in Italian, but any topic can be explained in English if required. The course provides the epistemological, technical and cultural foundations of Translation Theory. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course provide data about all diacronic and syncronic knowledge involved in translation theory and in professional training. Moreover, the scientific approach to a field firstly developed within the humanities will stimulate students to understand the specificity of scientific thinking, included the arhuing methods and the use of shared terminology. Last, but not least, students will learn a theoretical model which can be used immediately to have useful parameters in translating. TEACHING METHODS During the course all topics are presented and discussed with students, trying to stimulate their critical thinking and to improve their scientific approach to discussion, including precise terminology and the attitude to support ideas with arguments. All interventions by students are maximally appreciated. SYLLABUS/CONTENT The course provides the epistemological, technical and cultural foundations of Translation Theory, particularly: of the psycho- e neurolinguistics of bilingualism, of the different fields of professional translation, of the history of translation theory and of the translation techniques used in the different field of the professional activity. a THORETICAL MODEL appliable to any translation process is provided ad a foundamental means in the decision making process of professional translation. Il corso verte su un'analisi del pensiero teorico sulla traduzione in chiave diacronica (passando in rassegna in modalità critica le intuizioni, i postulati e le idee dei grandi pensatori della teoria occidentale partendo da San Gerolamo) e sincronica (offrendo un modello attuale, il più possibile formalizzato, utile all'applicazione effettiva in ambito professionale). In secondo luogo, affronta la storia e le conoscenze attuali delle neuroscienze, con particolare riferimento alle ricerche sul cervello bilingue. Inoltre, affronta le caratteristiche della traduzione per l'editoria, lo spettacolo e l'ambito tecnico delle professioni. Infine, illustra le tecniche di traduzione (esplicitazione, spostamento, compensazione) e le strategie inerenti al processo di traduzione (attualizzazione/storicizzazione; omologazione/straniamento). Salmon, M. Mariani, Bilinguismo e traduzione. Dalla neurolinguistica alla didattica delle lingue, Milano, FrancoAngeli, 2012. Moreover, each studente will select 4 readings (papers) from a set of proposed antologies, will select two books among a long list of texts about the history of translation theory, neuroscience, phylology, translatology, artificial intelligence, linguistics. Finally, each student proposes a free topic of personal interest, which coul have some interest for one of the tpics considered during the course. The large bibliograhy in a long list will be included in a DETTAILED PROGRAM which will be available online at the beginning of the course. Erasmus students can have the biblography reduced: besides the two handbooks, it is required to read two papers (history of translation theory) and one book chosen among dozens titles provided in the list within the above mentioned DETAILED PROGRAM. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD LAURA SALMON Ricevimento: Prof. Salmon's office hours are organized twice per week, except February, June and July (when the schedule changes depending on the exams and sometimes they take place only once per week), and are suspended during all August. The exames is a conversation with the two member of a Commission (proff. Salmon & Borghi, in presence of at least another student) about the handbooks (for all students) and the topics/reading selected by the single student. Each student has to print his own pogram, which must be signed by prof. Salmon (how to write the program will be explained both in the written detailed program and to the class, during the course). Each testing lastes normally around 30-40 min. A list of the main questions asked by the Commission is available from Prof. Salmon's homepage.
