OVERVIEW

Spanish 1 consists of Spanish language lessons, with practice of the four language skills (called Lettorato), taught in Semester 1 and 2 by Dr. Morena Carla Lanieri, and a Theoretical Module, taught in Semester 2 by Dr. Elena Errico.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Spanish 1 tackles theoretic and practical topics of Spanish Linguistics, with a special focus on the historical, cultural and social development of Spanish. Language lessons aim at developing Advanced C1 CEFR language skills.

The course aims at providing an advanced understanding of the features of the oral political discourse in the media in Spain and in Spanish America, from a Pragmatics and Critical Discourse Analysis perspective.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Theoretical Module:

The oral political discourse in the media (interviews, talk shows, etc.) from a Pragmatics and Critical Discourse Analysis perspective. Authentic materials in Spanish will be analyzed, looking at the relationship between language, ideology and power that emerges from them.

Lettorato:

Analysis of cultural products (also from a language point of view) and their impact on the society and the market.

EXAM DESCRIPTION

An oral test for the Theoretical Module and a written and oral test for Lettorato.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Theoretical module

The Theoretical Module part will consist of the oral discussion of a short paper written in Spanish by the students on a theoretical or practical topic included in the syllabus. The assessment will take into account familiarity with the contents of the bibliographical references and the ability to apply them both in terms of critical reflection and analysis of texts or transcriptions of interactions in Spanish. 

Lettorato

The Lettorato part will consist of an oral and written test. The written test will include the production of an argumentative text (a letter to the Editor), a short commentary of a literary text and exercises aimed at testing lexical and grammar skills. The oral test will be a conversation on current affairs topics.
