AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course aims to provide basic elements of the analytical instruments and diagnostic laboratory in the evaluation of the metabolic functions and organs with special regards to the general aspects of laboratory tests, such as analytical and diagnostic characteristics, the type of the different biological samples and the relative sampling mode. Large emphasis will be given to the study of the biochemical markers as indicators of pathological processes, metabolic pathways or organ profiles. AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES The course will allow the student to acquire the basic knowledge to critically evaluate the significance of the data obtained from clinical biochemistry in relation to human disease conditions. The student will acquire the basics to be able to access the clinical biochemist given as a diagnostic tool. In particular: knowledge of the main laboratory tests and the biological basis, molecular and pathophysiological which are prerequisites and foundation; critical interpretation of laboratory results with regard to the uncertainty of measurement and biological variability; reliability evaluation of the diagnostic laboratory investigations; appropriate interpretation of the results and their critical correlation with molecular and biological events induced by the pathological fact; knowledge of the main types of diagnostic tests and diagnostic significance of change in laboratory parameters; TEACHING METHODS Lectures SYLLABUS/CONTENT The biological sample: mode of the sampling and storage of blood. The biological sample: collecting urine. Analytical variability. Biological variability. Diagnostic laboratory test efficiency. Main laboratory techniques used in the clinic. Evaluation of renal function. Acid-base balance: clinical biochemistry and major alterations. Acid-base balance: biochemical aspects and the organ fees. Urine analysis. Lipoprotein metabolism. Laboratory evaluation of the lipoprotein metabolism. The laboratory in liver disease. Clinical biochemistry evaluation of jaundice. Laboratory diagnosis of infarction. Serum proteins. The inflammation laboratory. Diabetes diagnostic laboratory. The laboratory in iron metabolism. Bone clinical biochemistry. Tumor markers: generalities. Tumor markers of more widespread clinical use. Modification of the biochemical parameters in pregnancy.
