OVERVIEW

The course proposes analysing single aesthetic themes in a multidisciplinary perspective. Particular attention will be given to the contributions to the debate made by psychology, the constructivist perspective in the cognitive field, the semiotic approach to art and communication theory. Readings of one or more of the classic aesthetic texts relevant to the themes being studied are envisaged.

The course proposes analysing aesthetological themes in a multidisciplinary perspective.

On each occasion particular attention will be given to the contributions to the debate made by the psychology of perception, the constructivist perspective in the cognitive field, the ontology of the virtual, the semiotic approach to art and communication theory. Readings of one or more of the classic aesthetic texts will be chosen on the basis of the issues currently the subject of disciplinary research. 

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

Supplying appropriate knowledge of a specific aesthetic theme by presenting its historical development, its philosophical implications and problematic aspects. Students will be given the skills to analytically penetrate the thoughts of philosophers whose works will be read in seminars in also in the original language. Analysing the interpretations of texts and the history of their reception. Discussing the current state of the debate on the themes in question. 

TEACHING METHODS

The course is made up of 54 hours of lectures with moments of assessment of learning and seminar readings.

The sublime. A specific object of study will be the Pseudo-Longino treatise and some fundamental moments of the interpretation of the concept in aesthetics and 18th century artistic practices.

The sublime. A specific object of study will be the Pseudo-Longino treatise and some fundamental moments of the interpretation of the concept in aesthetics and 18th century artistic practices. In the second part the pages dedicated to the sublime in Kant’s third critique will be read and commented.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

During lectures active participation of students will be stimulated with discussion of the single points of the programme. During the final exam, which is oral, the level of students’ comprehension and ability to present will be evaluated. To pass students must demonstrate understanding of basic concepts of the course and present them clearly and coherently, albeit without analysing them in-depth but with a fair use of vocabulary. To attain excellence, students must analyse concepts that they are asked to discuss and demonstrate the ability to develop them autonomously, discussing with impeccable logic and making connections with other themes. All of this must be enhanced with appropriate and intelligent personal observations and an excellent use of specific lexicon. To this end, the cultural background and specific professional needs of students from other courses external to the Humanities School will be taken into account.

FOR STUDENTS REGISTERED IN THE PHILOSOPHICAL METHODOLOGIES COURSE:

Optional written dissertation on a classical text commented upon during lectures to be agreed on with teaching staff.
