AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of this course is to provide students with a) an outline of the history of dance; b) the theoretical and critical tools to approach dance; c) detailed studies (with the help of documentaries) on a few of the periods in the history of dance  with a special focus on the issues of the 20th century.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Dance is a primal form of expression and its relationship to theater placing the body as common denominator of action on the stage. Thus, this course offers a view into theatrical dance in the Western world from its origins in Italian Renaissance courts to the unbridled innovation and development of 20th century choreography to the synergy of dance with other contemporary art forms and the definition of performance.  A look at the current state of dance as a living testament of the now in the dance companies that do their research and practice on daily life.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Oral exam: the mark will be divided into three equal parts: a) on the student’s learning of the information in the course texts, b) on the student’s ability to critically express this information, c) on the student’s initiative to do independent study.
