OVERVIEW

The course provides basic knowledge in the fields of Stratigraphic Geology, Structural Geology and Petrography, aimed at understanding the main geological processes and the classification of the main types of rocks. The course plays an important role within the curriculum of studies because it provides the basic skills to face the advanced geological studies.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the basic knowledge on Earth’s dynamics and on the following main themes: tectonics, magmatism, metamorphism, sedimentation, lithostratigraphy in the various geodynamic environments. The course also provides the necessary practical background for recognition of the main tectonic and sedimentary structures in the field and for rock recognition and classification.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

The exam consists of:

- a practical (written) test related to the recognition of rock samples and the description of a petrographic classification;

- an oral test consisting in answering the questions asked by teachers on topics dealt with during the lessons and in the discussion of a report (written by the candidate) on one of the fieldwork carried out.

The final grade is given by the weighted average between the written and the oral tests. The oral test can be sustained both in the same session as the written one and in subsequent sessions published on the UNIGE website. Two sessions will be available in the winter period (January-February) and four in the summer period (June, July, September).

ASSESSMENT METHODS

The written test will verify the effective acquisition of the necessary knowledge for the recognition of the fundamental rock types and the mastery of the classification schemes.

The oral test will focus on the topics covered during the lectures, the exercises in the classroom and the fieldwork. It will aim to assess not only if the student has achieved an adequate level of knowledge, but also if he has acquired the ability to discuss fundamental geological processes by integrating the notions received from both modules. The ability to expose the arguments clearly and with correct terminology will also be evaluated.
