AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After following this course the student will be able to understand the fundamental laws of physics and the main ideas of electromagnetism in vacuum. Particular importance is given to show  the usefulness and the limitations of modelling and approximation in the development of understanding of the physical world.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The aim of the course is providing the necessary bases for the comprehension of physical phenomena of electromagnetism and developing abilities to address in a quantitative and relational way simple problems. The course will allow to familiarise with the fundamental laws that allow the evaluation of electro-magnetic fields in simple configuration and to approach to the study of simple electical networks.

TEACHING METHODS

The course foresees 40 hours of theoretical explanation and 20 hours of exercises guided by the lecturer or the tutor. All the contents are covered during the course, the usage of the suggested books is recommended. The final exam includes written and oral test.

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Electrostatic: Coulomb's law and electric field, Gauss's law, potential energy and electric potential. Capacitor and capacity. Current and resistance, direct current circuit, RC circuit. Magneto-static: magnetic field, charge in an electro-magnetic field, Biot-Savart's law, Ampere's law, force between two conductors. Electro-magnetic induction, auto-induction, RL circuit, Maxwell's equations. Electro-magnetic waves (hints).z
