The technical & economic management of new power systems relying on renewables, storage units and low emissions fossil fuel trigeneration sources is a fundamental skill of an Energy Engineer interested to devolp her/his future career in the industrial or institutional sectors or as a freelance working on Sustainable Energy issues. AIMS AND CONTENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The course is designed to provide theoretical and methodological skills for the economic analyses related to the development of projects in the sustainable energy sector. In this context, it encompasses the fundamentals of energy markets, the procedures to calculate high efficiency cogeneration and the levelized cost of electricity. A special focus is devoted to new power production and distribution infrastructures such as smart grids and smart microgrids, with specific insight concerning with energy management platforms. TEACHING METHODS Theoretical lectures with specific case studies to be solved in order to fix all the concepts. SYLLABUS/CONTENT Administrative and authorization procedures to install renewable power plants; - the Energy Markets; feed-in tariff and quota system incentives; mechanisms for selling energy; - Renewable Energy for Heating & Cooling Support Scheme; - Cogeneration and Trigeneration systems (technical issues and legislation); - Emission Trading Systems; - Investment analysis in the Sustainable Energy sector; - Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE); - SEU (Efficient Systems of Users) & RIU (Internal Networks of Users); - Basics of “smart power grids”; - Microgrids: definitions, components; - Energy Management Systems. RECOMMENDED READING/BIBLIOGRAPHY - Documents provided by the teacher; The following volumes: - Fundamentals of Power System Economics, Daniel Kirschen, Goran Strbac, 2004, Wiley; - Microgrids: Control and Operation, Josep Guerrero, Juan Vasquez, 2015, Wiley-IEEE; - Power System Stability and Control, Prabha Kundur, 1994, McGraw-Hill Professional. TEACHERS AND EXAM BOARD FEDERICO DELFINO Ricevimento: The students can always meet the teacher outside the classroom in order to ask for some clarifications or integrations with respect to the concepts explained during the lessons, provided that they fix an appointment directly with the teacher (reference phone and e-mail are given to the students during the first lesson of the course).
