According to the Learning outcomes and to the Syllabus (see links below), the course aims at proving the basic information about:
Noise generation from fluid machines,
Effects of noise on human beings, and
Aerodynamic noise reduction methods.
Basic information on Physical acoustics and signal processing is also provided, which is necessary for comprehension of the above listed contents.
Understanding of the origin of the aerodynamic noise, with reference to aeronautic applications. Basic planning of aerodynamic noise measurements, analysis of the results of sound pressure level measurements, identification of the active moise generating mechanisms. Theoretical basis for noise generating mechanisms control.
With reference to turbomachines and propellers employed in aeronautical propulsion systems, the student, through participation to classes and individual study, will
know the effect of the various kinds of noise on the human beings,
understand the origin of the generated aerodynamic noise,
know the physical properties of the noise generating mechanisms,
know the theoretical bases of the aerodynamic noise reduction,
be able to set measurements of the sound pressure level, and
be able to interpret the results of measurements of sound pressure level and of its power spectrum.
Theoretical and applied lectures
Basic principles of Physical acoustics and Psychoacoustics
Measurements techniques for sound pressure level and method for the analysis of experimental results
Elementary acoustic sources and wave propagation in ducts
Study and properties of the aerodynamically generated noise (Lighthill and Ffowcs-Williams Hawkings equations): noise generated by turbulence, jets, and interaction of fluid flow with solid bodies. Applications to turbomachines, propellers, and jet engines.
Laboratory classes.
