OVERVIEW

Heat transfer is a branch of thermodynamics whose aim is to study the laws of propagation of thermal energy. The role of heat transfer is crucial in the design of conversion/production energy systems, heating and air-conditioning plants and several industrial manufacturing processes; for these reasons, heat transfer backgrounds are mandatory for a student in mechanical engineering oriented towards energetics.

AIMS AND CONTENT

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides heat transfer foundations (conduction, convection, radiation)  as well as advanced topics addressed to the field of mechanics/aeronautics discipline.

AIMS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

This course is aimed at providing the basic knowledges, from the theoretical (heat transfer laws and governig equations) and practical (problem solving) standpoints. At the end of the course, the student is expected to face basic and advanced heat transfer problems, with particular reference to aeronautics and energy conversion fileds. The learning outcomes will be assessed during the final examinations (see the appropriate section).

PREREQUISITES

No prerequisites are required. However, students are strongly recommended to attend the lessons in the classroom.

TEACHING METHODS

The time-schedule of the course is five hours per week (first semester only)

SYLLABUS/CONTENT

Foundations

Mono and multidimensional heat conduction.

Transient conduction: scale analysis, semi-infinite body model.

Forced convection: boundary layer equations, dimensionless groups.

External and internal forced convection: theory and semi-empirical correlations.

Natural and two-phase convective heat transfer

Radiative properties of material and radiation heat transfer among black and gray surfaces.

Advanced topics / applications

Experimental heat transfer. Gas turbine heat transfer.

EXAMS

EXAM DESCRIPTION

Examination: oral.

Examinations are scheduled according to the official calendar; in case of a negative evaluation (or with a score not accepted by the student) it can be repeated only once during the same session (winter o summer session) and no more than twice throughout the same academic year.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Oral examination, based on a specific subject among those tackled during the taught course, with in addition a couple of small synthetic questions on other one/two subjects.

The aim of the examination is to assess the capability of solving specific thermal problems (including physical formulation and mathematical passages) and the skill in  discussing and arguing them.
